A Home That Makes the Master’s Possible

As a Dual Programs Coordinator and Fulbright Program Advisor at the University of Tulsa, Mav is helping connect students to opportunities that will help them succeed in life. Having also worked as public school teacher, Mav has built a career opening doors for the next generation. Now, through Habitat for Humanity, Mav is opening a new door for themself, one that lets them step into their very own home.

Coming from a low-income household, home never felt like one place for very long, something Mav and their college roommate and best friend bonded over.

“Housing insecurity was something we both experienced growing up,” said Mav. “We really connected over that because it was the first time we actually had a place to stay that was pretty permanent.”

After graduation, Mav stayed connected with their roommate, who ended up buying their home through Green Country Habitat for Humanity. Having heard about the program through their friend, Mav decided to take advantage of this life changing opportunity.

Mav completed the HomeBuyer program in four months and has now purchased their Habitat home. They say this opportunity is helping them not only find permanent housing but also allows them to achieve new heights.

“This just provides a lot of stability for me, and without the affordability of this place, I was going to have to quit my master’s program.” Mav added, “It’s thanks to Habitat that I’m able to finish my masters, and I’m a first-generation college student, so I’ll be the first one to get a master’s in my family”

Mav is looking forward to how close their new home is to TU and plans to build an arts and craft room and personal library in their new home.

Congratulations, Mav on this exciting chapter––and special thanks to American Bank of Oklahoma for providing an affordable mortgage.

Habitat believes that everyone deserves a place to call home. Apply or share our home purchasing opportunity with others:
