A Lesson in Perseverance

Welcome home, Meggie—a high school English teacher who once only dreamed of owning a home—now moving from Claremore to Tulsa to begin a new chapter in her own house.

After years in apartments, Meggie wanted more: peace, a yard, a garage, and freedom to decorate. Homeownership felt out of reach—until a coworker bought a Habitat home in Tulsa.

“He said it was very affordable,” Meggie recalled. To her surprise, affordability didn’t mean sacrificing what she wanted.

Meggie started the Homebuyer Program in 2024 but couldn’t finish. Determined, she reapplied, completed the courses, and now prepares to move in, reflecting on encouragement from friends, family, Habitat’s Homeowner Services, and her students.

“They’ve been cheering me on,” she said. “And I tell them, if I can do it, you can do it too,” she said.

Special thanks go to American Bank of Oklahoma for providing Meggie with an affordable mortgage that has helped turn her dream of homeownership into a reality.
