From Scratch to Stability

After years of sharing a home with her brothers, Janai is finally stepping into a space of her own — a brand-new Habitat home!

A Louisiana Cajun at heart, Janai grew up cooking from scratch since the age of seven. Now, she can’t wait to fire up her brand-new gas stove — something she’s always dreamed of having. 

“I’m a big cook,” she said. “Having a gas stove is going to be so fun for me. I’ve always wanted one!”

Born in Texas and raised in a military family, Janai moved often before finally settling in Oklahoma. She’s been in Tulsa for about five years now, working in life insurance as a policy owner service representative — a career that allows her to help people every day.

When her counselor encouraged her to apply for Habitat’s Homebuyer Program, Janai decided, ‘the worst they can tell you is no’. That leap of faith led to new skills, new confidence, and now, a new home.

“Just give it a shot,” she said. “It’ll make a big difference in your life.”
