Building the Future, Brick by Brick

For Autumn, the dream of having a place that truly feels like home is finally coming into focus — a place where her three dogs, two cats, and her own sense of stability can settle in for good.

At 31, Autumn works as a Lab and Facility Technician. She currently rents in Broken Arrow — “not the worst situation,” she says, but far from work and not ideal when you have a small kingdom of pets. A home of her own always felt like a distant possibility.

Autumn grew up in Avante, a tiny town near Skiatook Lake. Her journey to homeownership began while working with the Cherokee Nation on mortgage assistance when her financial advisor, Robin, mentioned Green Country Habitat for Humanity, changing everything for her.

“Once I got into the program, they really helped me through pretty much every step,” Autumn said. “It was a very important program for me personally.”

Autumn entered the Homebuyer Program unsure of what to expect. What she found was guidance, support, and an education she hadn’t realized she needed.

“I did not know the homebuying process,” she said. “I didn’t know what to do when you own a home. If it weren’t for the Habitat classes, I’d probably still be lost. They took me through every step, every possibility.”

And while she’s excited for the stability of homeownership, there’s one part of her new home she treasures most: the brick veneer.

“My father used to be a bricklayer,” she shared. “So to see the brick be this really beautiful color… I can’t wait for him to see it. I think he’s really going to like it.”

As she looks back on her journey, Autumn encourages future homebuyers to make the most of the experience.

“Really utilize all of the resources,” she said. “Keep in touch with the speakers, the educators, even your classmates. Use the information and the people you meet.”

And her last piece of advice?

“Don’t get in a hurry. Take your time. There’s no rush.”

Congratulations, Autumn — and welcome home.
