A Teacher’s Dream Comes True in the Kendall Whittier Neighborhood
Meet Habitat’s new homeowner, Cherokee — a dedicated science teacher at Union Public Schools and a proud member of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes.
After years of sharing a home with a fellow teacher, Cherokee was ready for a place of her own. Her father, always looking out for her future, discovered Green Country Habitat for Humanity while researching homeowner assistance programs and sent her the link. “I just wanted something for myself that I could call my own,” Cherokee reflected.
The application process began in March, and within three months, Cherokee was approved. She chose one of the Whittier Townhomes in the Kendall Whittier neighborhood for its walkability, vibrant community feel, and proximity to local shops and activities. “It’s just me and my cat,” she laughed. “And I didn’t want to mow the yard.”
As an education enthusiast, Cherokee found joy in Habitat’s required homeowner education classes — eagerly taking notes on everything from budgeting to basic home maintenance. She also embraced the program’s sweat equity hours, working at the Habitat ReStore while forming bonds with other future homeowners.
Now, standing in her new home, Cherokee looks forward to making the space her own — and welcoming friends and family into a place that reflects her hard work, resilience, and cultural pride.
Special thanks to MapleMark Bank for providing her with an affordable mortgage and helping make homeownership possible.
