Where Pancakes, Faith, and Dreams Come Together

The journey to homeownership is different for everyone, and for Miguel  and Yanilette, it led them over 2,000 miles to Tulsa, Oklahoma.

After experiencing the cold, snowy winters in Rochester, New York, the family longed for a climate more like their native Puerto Rico. “We wanted to get away from the cold,” Miguel explains. With their two daughters, they found the perfect fit in Tulsa, a city with all four seasons and less snow.

Yanilette heard about Green Country Habitat for Humanity from her sister-in-law. “I didn't really pay attention at first,” she admits, “but then last year, I said, ‘Okay, I need to learn more about the program.’” She began researching, determined to make their dream a reality.

The application and education process was a new experience, but one they embraced. “It was good,” Miguel says. They received strong support from their Habitat counselor, and have already inspired a friend in Dallas to look into the program.

Miguel and Yanilette appreciate their new home’s central location near school and work, while their seven-year-old loves the kitchen and their four-year-old enjoys her room and the living room. The girls especially enjoy helping their mother make pancakes, lasagna, and pasteles.

When asked for advice for others, Miguel and Yanilette emphasize faith and action. “Put one leg ahead of the other and keep going,” Miguel advises. Yanilette adds, “First and foremost follow God’s path. Don’t wait. just get it done.”

Special thanks to our good friends at Midfirst Bank for providing Miguel and Yanilette’s affordable mortgage!
