Habitat Success Story

Helping Families Accomplish Their Goals

Earlier this year Nicole Rodgers went through our program and received the keys to her brand new Habitat home in North Tulsa, where she lives with her three children. Each Habitat homeowner has a unique story, and we chatted with Nicole about her experiences going through the process.

What’s your opinion of Habitat for Humanity's Homeowner Program?

I can honestly say that Habitat for Humanity has changed my life. They do amazing work in the community, they support the families and they collaborate with the existing neighborhoods. The homebuyer process can be challenging and complex, but with the education courses, Habitat provides much-needed support.

In the process of becoming a homeowner, what were some hurdles you faced?
Personally I went through some difficult hardships during this process, including a divorce. As you can imagine, ending a marriage is both financially and emotionally taxing, but Habitat supported me and stuck with me. as I worked my way closer to homeownership.

Another hurdle arose as I dealt with my student loan consolidation process; it was long and complicated and I didn't expect the forbearance to be an issue, but I had to be patient. As I remained transparent with Habitat, they understood and navigated me through the steps. I faced setbacks but my financial counselor advocated for me and was very understanding and encouraging. That compassion was something I didn't expect from Habitat, and it was priceless.

What’s your favorite part of becoming a new homeowner?
Really I have two favorite parts really. The first part would be the sweat equity hours; I enjoyed doing the work and helping out. Another favorite part is building a relationship with new people. I'm very lucky to have been able to go through this Habitat process with my neighbor; we met in the Homebuyer program and we’ve become fast friends.

How will becoming a homeowner affect the lives of your family?
I can't fully put into words what homeownership means to my family. This home is what I’ve prayed for and it represents stability, it represents the sacrifices I've made along the way, and it means generational wealth for my kids.

What advice would you give to other families considering Habitat for Humanity?

I would definitely recommend other families applying for this phenomenal program. Homeownership can be hard, but when you sign up with Habitat for Humanity you automatically establish a strong partnership that will help you along the way.

Truly, it's a community of support with the Habitat team and the group of people going through the same process with you. It feels amazing to celebrate the hard work you've done and the goal you've accomplished, and it's worth taking a chance.
