22 & Homegrown

Welcome home, Mo — a young man who is building an even brighter future for himself by purchasing his Habitat townhome at just 22 years old.

Just last year, Mo was a college student worried about assignments and graduation. Now, after earning his degree and only eight months into his first full-time job with Prosperity Bank, he’s a proud Whittier Townhome owner, something he still struggles to believe.

“It’s surreal,” he says with a laugh. “Sometimes I sit back and think, this is insane.”

Homeownership wasn’t something Mo expected to happen so quickly. But he had two powerful things behind him: a family who had prepared him carefully for adulthood — and a sister who had already gone through the Habitat program. From those experiences, he knew homeownership would be the right move for him.

“You just can’t pass up an opportunity like that,” he says, “especially at 22 years old.”

The home Mo purchased is one of Green Country Habitat’s Whittier Townhomes — and for a young professional just starting out, he says it’s a smart fit. There’s no yard to maintain, no aging systems to worry about, and no surprise repairs eating into a new budget.

The location doesn’t hurt either. Tucked near some of Tulsa’s most vibrant neighborhoods, the Whittier Townhomes put Mo within easy reach of Kendall Whittier, the University of Tulsa, Downtown, Cherry Street, and more.

Still, getting here wasn’t easy. Mo balanced a full-time job, sweat equity hours, and Habitat’s homeowner classes.

“There were definitely times I thought, I don’t want to go to this class,” he admits.

But each class taught him everything he needed to be a homeowner, from setting up utilities and understanding his HOA responsibilities to budgeting and managing his mortgage.

Now, Mo is looking forward to the stability and equity he’ll be building with every payment, decades ahead of most of his peers.

“It feels good knowing the mortgage ends one day,” he says. “We're owners. That really means something.”

For anyone who feels uncertain about taking the same step, Mo has a simple message: Trust the process.

“Trust me, I was scared too. But with this program, they walk you through every step. If you work hard and handle your business, there’s nothing to be afraid of.”

Congratulations, Mo — and welcome home. Special thanks to Maplemark Bank for providing an affordable mortgage.
