From Cali to Tulsa, One Family Finds Home

After 12 years of renting apartments and houses, Luann and her daughter, Allie, were ready for something permanent. Thanks to Green Country Habitat for Humanity, three generations of their family are beginning a new chapter in a home they can finally call their own.

“We’ve had rent houses. We’ve had apartments,” Luann said. “I was really trying to find something for us to have permanently. When we started getting connected with Habitat, it was like, ‘This is amazing what they do.’”

Allie first learned about Habitat through a former coworker who had purchased a home through the program. After her boys switched schools, she started noticing Habitat homes around their new route — and between that and her coworker’s experience, she began looking into the program herself. It felt like the perfect fit for their family, especially with their new home's location closer to the boys' schools.

Throughout the homebuying process, Luann and Allie were surprised by how much they learned through Habitat's homeownership classes.

“I think every new homeowner should have to take the classes,” Luann said. “They teach you how to care for your home, budget your money, and stay on track.”

Walking through their new home, every family member already had a favorite feature. Jack loves the location and is excited to make his bedroom his own. Titan can’t wait to paint his room yellow and get “so many cats!” Allie is looking forward to starting a garden. For Luann, it’s the simple things that mean the most.

“I’m glad we all have our own rooms,” she said. “It’s brand new and ready for us to start making it our own.”

“We never thought we’d be homeowners,” Allie said. “To have this opportunity is everything.”

For Jack, the home represents even more: “I think it’s going to be a great opportunity for us... to have a fresh start.”

“Ask questions,” she said. “They’ll help you every step of the way. Even if you don’t qualify right away, they have so many different programs that help you get there. It's pretty awesome.”
